News agencies, local residents, and local business owners have reported an increase of careless and reckless drivers. Las Vegas' growing population means there will be even more speeding cars and close calls. A local driving school reported 90-percent of its customers were there because of speeding tickets.
In one 30-day period, there were 4 collisions between motorcycle police officers and Las Vegas drivers. Motorcycle police officers indicate that while many accidents involve intoxicated drivers, many accidents are caused by drivers not paying full attention to the road. On many working days, motorcycle police officers spend a lot of time dodging distracted drivers or drunk drivers. Because motorcycles are smaller than most vehicles, they can be easily overlooked inattentive or speeding drivers.
Regardless of age, experience, and carefulness, any driver or pedestrian can be a victim of another driver. Recently, the reigning Miss Nevada was seriously injured when driving her car on Interstate 15. A casino tour bus attempted an illegal U-turn in front of her car. Her car was traveling about 75 mph when the bus crashed into her. It took 8 weeks to go from being bedridden to a wheelchair. Like everywhere else in the country, tour buses, automobiles, and motorcycles share the road with semi trucks.
On June 17, 2011, the Las Vegas fire Department simulated a semi truck accident in order to help prepare firemen and rescue workers to save as many lives as possible should an unpredictable semi truck and multiple car accident occur. The rescue workers trained with wenches, the Jaws of Life, and a specialized truck capable of lifting 60 tons off the ground.
In an accident of a catastrophic nature, immediate response is essential. The best chance for survival is during the first hour after the accident, referred to as the "golden hour." Success depends upon problem free communications, training to combat the chaos of the situation, and the personal preparation of each rescuer.
