Did you ever notice that the shoes you purchased in the early 70's always seems to be in again 20 years later? Scooters and mopeds are really no different. The reality is, many of these companies are playing up the trend and coming out with scooters that look retro. Did you ever notice that the shirts you purchased in the 1970's always seems to be popular again 25 years later? Two wheelers are really the same way. In fact, many of these companies are playing up the trend and coming out with scooters that look retro. The Metropolitan from Honda and the GVS from Vespa actually look like a form of older versions.
When Henry Ford was building Model T's in Detroit, scooters were all the rage in Europe. These scooters looked a lot like what we think of as a moped today. They have definitely changed over the years, but people still long for the retro look. It seems like it happens in every market. Take a look a 4 great scooter brands:
The Cushman Company -- This company produced a lot of the motor bikes that you see G.I's riding in WWII documentaries. They stopped producing scooters in 1965, but they continue to produce different types of motor vehicles.
The Mitsubishi Silver Pigeon -- So, what do you do with old warplane parts? Well, the Mitsubishi company use them to build Silver Pigeons back in the 40's. Now that is using what you got.
The King of Old Style - Vespa -- The Vespa is one of the most popular scooter brands today. They are considered the standard for scooters in Europe.
Honda -- Honda launched the most popular scooter of all time, the Super Cub, in 1958. With more than 60 million sold worldwide, it is the best selling powered vehicle of all time. Pretty impressive. If you can get your hands on one of these, you will have a classic on your hands.
On a worldwide scale, Honda has probably been the most diverse and they have certainly had more models than any other company that makes them.
It's cool that they are bringing back the retro scooter look. Most of them are just for looks and will come with 4 stroke engines that are water cooled instead of 2 stroke engines. Fuel injection is also a key feature that has been added to the newer versions.
We all seem to love vintage.
