When riding a bike or motorcycle, one is at risk of having an accident. A fall or a collision while riding one of these may result to injuries ranging from minor bruising to severe injuries such as permanent brain damage or even death. It is important that when engaging in such activity, that one must be equipped with helmets to provide safety and protection for the rider.
Since the ancient times, helmets have been used as an important part of a protective suit. Extreme changes on their overall structure and outlook have also been undergone by these protective gears over the years. However, helmets are often seen as bothersome and inconvenient by many that they tend to avoid wearing one. Many also reason that they don't wear one as these gears cannot prevent nor stop any accident. True enough, accidents cannot be prevented by wearing helmets. Nevertheless, a life can be saved if a helmet is worn during these inevitable occurrences.
Statistics show that about one-fourth of the people involved in a fall or collision while riding a bike, motorcycle, or other high-impact activity who are brought in emergency rooms have head injuries and one out of every eight is reported to have incurred brain injuries-injuries which may have been prevented by wearing safety helmets. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for example, estimated that approximately 1,158 lives were saved in 2003 because motorcyclists were wearing helmets. According to the Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute, on the other hand, bicyclists not wearing bike helmets are 14 times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash than helmeted riders.
Generally there are five kinds of helmets, namely, combat helmets, two-wheeler helmets, sport helmets, occupational helmets, and emergency and protective troop helmets. Helmets that are used for military purposes are also called combat helmets. PHG helmets used in poison gases and bone domes used by aircraft pilots are some example of combat helmets. Helmets worn by cyclists and motorcycle riders which are specially designed to withstand far greater impacts then normal accidents are called two-wheeler helmets. On the other hand, sports helmets, as their name imply, are used in sports activities. The construction helmets which are often seen and are always mandatory for safety regulations are example of the occupational helmets. Other examples of this are the hard hats, miners' helmets, and welders' helmets. Lastly are protective troop helmets. These are gears worn by people who serve in emergency situations such as policemen, firefighters, lifeguards, and SWAT teams.
Given the importance helmets play in saving people's lives, it is important that one chooses the best helmet to use. When shopping for a helmet, the first thing to look for is its approval of safety seal from your countries' consumer product safety organization like the American National Standards Institute in the U.S. Second, the helmets must fit snugly. Motorcyclist must keep in mind that the key to wearing a helmet is the right fitting. Also, a loose helmet cannot protect the head as much as a fitted ones. The visibility is also important to think about. To prevent accidents, it is important that the helmet does not block the rider's vision when driving.
Bike helmets, combat helmets, etc. are very important gears to be used in various activities such as biking, motorcycling, and other high-impact activities. These are protective suits that can save your life, if not prevent the danger itself while performing aforementioned activities.
